The National Green Hydrogen Mission India is a highly ambitious project to make India independent of energy imports. India aims to be the hub of green hydrogen for the world. The prime minister of India has set the mission in his 75th Independence Day speech. The Union Cabinet of India approved the National Green Hydrogen Mission on January 4, 2022.

Looking at the current data, India spends over $160 billion of foreign exchange every year on energy imports. Considering the Indian economic growth target, the bill for energy imports is likely to double in the next 15 years. To reduce the energy dependency of India, the government wants to make India a green hydrogen hub to export to the world.
National Green Hydrogen Mission India
The government of India has approved an initial outlay for the Mission of INR 197,440 million. This includes an outlay of INR 174,900 million for the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, INR 14,660 million for Pilot Projects, INR 4,000 million for Research & Development, and INR 3,880 million towards other Mission components.
Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is responsible for this project and will formulate the scheme guidelines for implementation of the respective components. With this scheme, the government of India aims to incentivise the commercial production of green hydrogen. The National Green Hydrogen Mission will facilitate demand creation, production, utilization and export of Green Hydrogen.
Sub-Components of National Green Hydrogen Mission UPSC
Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) Programme: The SIGHT programme targets the domestic manufacturing of electrolysers and the production of Green. INR 174,900 million fund is allocated for this programme.
Initiation of Pilot Projects: To support pilot projects of green hydrogenINR 14,660 million is allocated. Under the Mission, the government will support pilot projects in green hydrogen end-use sectors and production pathways.
Investment in R&D Projects: Government of India will invest INR 4,000 million for Research & Development. This will help the Public-Private Partnership framework for green hydrogen R&D. Investment in Green hydrogen R&D projects will be goal-oriented, and time-bound, and will be helpful to develop competitive technologies in India.
Development of Required Skills: INR 3,880 million is allocated to develop required skills concerning green hydrogen. This will help to scale up the green hydrogen mission in India.
The objective of the Green Hydrogen Mission
Under the National Green hydrogen mission, the government of India aims to export green hydrogen to the world by 2030. The major objective of the National Green Hydrogen Mission is as follows.
- The government of India aims to develop a green hydrogen production capacity of at least 5 MMT (Million Metric Tonne) per annum. The mission will also aim to add about 125 GW of renewable energy to help in producing the above green hydrogen in the country.
- It aims to invest over Rs 8 lakh crore and will create over Six lakh jobs.
- Again, this mission will help to reduce fossil fuel imports by over INR 1 trillion cumulatively and will be able to subsidize nearly 50 MMT of annual greenhouse gas emissions.
